Weil, Gotshal & Manges Faces Leadership Turmoil Amid Partner Departures and Failed Merger Talks

Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, a prominent law firm established in 1931, is currently confronting significant internal challenges. The firm’s management committee has convened to deliberate on its future direction, amidst a series of high-profile partner departures and unsuccessful merger negotiations.

In recent weeks, Weil has experienced the exit of approximately 40 partners. Notably, Michael Aiello, the firm’s former Mergers & Acquisitions chief, along with five other partners, transitioned to Cravath, Swaine & Moore in September 2026. Additionally, Chris Machera, previously co-head of Weil’s private equity group, joined Paul Weiss. These departures have raised concerns about the firm’s stability and its ability to retain top talent.

Compounding these challenges, Ramona Nee, who was slated to succeed Barry Wolf as Executive Partner in January 2027, has reportedly declined the position. Nee, currently Co-Managing Partner and Co-Head of the U.S. Private Equity practice, is said to be in discussions to join Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. Her decision not to assume the leadership role has intensified the firm’s leadership crisis.

In an effort to address these issues, Weil engaged in merger discussions with Willkie Farr & Gallagher. However, these talks collapsed by October 22, 2026, leaving the firm without a strategic partner. The breakdown of these negotiations has further exacerbated concerns about Weil’s future direction.

The firm’s management committee is now tasked with navigating these turbulent times. The decisions made in the coming weeks will be crucial in determining Weil’s ability to stabilize its operations and maintain its position in the competitive legal market.
