The UK’s government intelligence, security and cyber agency, Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), and France’s national cybersecurity agency have issued unprecedented warnings over cybersecurity risks specifically for the legal sector. This comes in light of an escalating number of major law firms becoming targets for cyberattacks.
Marking the third such caution in five years and the second one in the past year alone, the recent
GCHQ report points towards the unique vulnerabilities in the legal sphere. Notably, no other sector-specific group has received this level of focused attention and warnings from the GCHQ pertaining to cybersecurity risks.
The issuance of these warnings coincides with an increasing number of law firms publicly acknowledging instances of data breaches and cyberattacks, highlighting the growing concern for cybersecurity in the legal industry.
