Midlevel Associates Seek Higher Pay and Reduced Hours, Defying Legal Profession Norms

The expectations of midlevel associates in big law firms circle around the demanding desire to be paid more while working less. These expectations were revealed by an anonymous Am Law 100 associate in response to a question in the American Lawyer Midlevel Associates Survey. Despite the fact that there were a series of salary raises last year that resulted in record high starting salaries along with record low billable hours, this associate expressed sound dissatisfaction.

Such expectations could potentially appear unrealistic in the context of the demanding workload that typically comes with elevated positions in leading law firms. The standard notion in the legal profession is that higher remuneration is directly proportional to increased responsibilities and longer work hours, a notion that these associates seem to defy.
