China’s lateral market for lawyers is being described as the worst in more than 15 years, rivalling even the global financial crisis of 2009, according to a report in Law.com. With national firms continuing to grow, but at a slower pace than in previous years, and international companies struggling to hire sufficient legal talent, uncertainty pervades the legal market in the country.
These developments present significant challenges for law firms planning their growth strategies in the region. On the one hand, international firms are operating on the ground with a minimum number of lawyers, struggling to lure new talent into their teams. On the other hand, despite the growth of domestic Chinese firms, this growth is happening at a significantly slower pace than just two years ago.
Adding to the complexity is the volatility of the Chinese market itself, with firms grappling with strategic planning in the face of some profound uncertainties. Similarly, legal professionals are confronted with the question of where they should focus their careers, particularly those eyeing lateral opportunities.
With such changing dynamics, both law firms and individual professionals in China’s legal space need to adapt to this new reality and navigate it strategically.
