PTAB Invalidates RapidPulse Blood Clot Removal Patent for Lack of Uniqueness

On September 8, 2023, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) found that numerous claims in a patent on a treatment for strokes caused by blood clots were invalid. Crediting Penumbra Inc., a medical device company, with providing enough evidence, PTAB stated that the claims made in the patent were too obvious.

The patent revolves around Penumbra’s RapidPulse blood clot removal system. After an intensive review, PTAB decided that several elements of the patented system weren’t innovative or unique, thereby rendering the patent invalid.
