As the world observes Mental Health Day, new research has emerged showing that one in four Portuguese legal professionals suffer from anxiety. Isabel Gameiro, a senior lawyer at Morais Leitão, has recently shared her own personal struggle with mental health, more specifically, coping with burn-out. Gameiro describes a battle with mental health that has ultimately led her to reduce her billable hours quota.
The legal profession has long been characterised by high-pressure environments and long hours. Gameiro’s story may resonate with many in the industry. Recent studies show mental health issues such as anxiety and depression are not uncommon in this sector. According to a study released on World Mental Health Day, Portugal’s legal professionals are no exception.
In response to this, there is a growing call for more discussions about mental health within the legal profession, to avoid such issues silently taking a toll on practitioners. More resources and support systems are also being advocated to aid these professionals.
The success, mental wellbeing and overall health of the workforce is integral to any industry. In recognition of the toll demanding work environments can take, more comprehensive support for workers’ mental health is being encouraged.
