California IP Attorney Disbarred for Ethical Violations and Obstructing Investigation

In a move that stands as a stark reminder for all within the legal sector, a California-based intellectual property attorney was recently handed a disbarment and saddled with $5,000 in sanctions. The punitive measures were levied due to a series of ethical violations the attorney purportedly committed. Those violations ranged from the practice of what has been termed as “unacceptable gamesmanship” during the discovery process in a state court case, all the way to the deliberate obstruction of an investigation launched against him by the bar.

According to the California State Bar, the attorney engaged in obdurate uncooperation during the discovery process of a case, likely in an attempt to unduly influence its course or outcome. He subsequently stonewalled the ensuing investigative measures undertaken by the state bar to ascertain the extent of his misconduct.

In light of the attorney’s actions, the state bar announced that he would be disbarred, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining the highest ethical standards within the profession to protect the interests of clients and uphold the dignity of the law. They also highlighted the critical importance for attorneys to cooperate during investigations, enforcing that any attempts to obstruct these processes would be met with significant penalties.
