China Surpasses United States in AI Patent Race, Expanding Technology Dominance

In the race for AI patents, China has widened its lead over the United States, according to recent data published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). As per the data reviewed, Chinese institutions filed for a total of 29,853 AI-related patents in 2022. This represents an increase from the previous year’s 29,000 filings and is almost 80% more than U.S. filings which showed a shrinkage of 5.5%.

The surge in patent applications demonstrates China’s intent to influence and form the development trajectory of a technology that could bring significant changes for the world’s wealthiest economies. China’s drive appeared to be paying off, with the country accounting for more than 40% of global AI applications over the past year.

China’s tech giants like Baidu and Alibaba are among the major players racing to monetise AI products. The fascinating aspect of this development is how these companies are taking on global behemoths in the race for AI supremacy. The increase in AI patent filings and the active role of their tech companies underline the country’s determination to dominate the AI space.
