Goldman Sachs and Citigroup Withdraw from Investcorp’s Abu Dhabi IPO Amid Regulatory Concerns

Two of Wall Street’s biggest banking entities, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Citigroup Inc., have abruptly withdrawn from the planned Abu Dhabi initial public offering (IPO) of an investment vehicle backed by Investcorp. As per reports given by insiders, apprehension over a regulatory gray area prompted this move.

A novel feature of the IPO was the proposal of a price stabilization mechanism. It was intended to be an innovative step in listings within the United Arab Emirates (UAE); however, this very element caused concern for the banks as they found difficulty in acquiring internal approval for it. The withdrawal of the said banks has become a cause of concern, given their prominent role in the global financial world.

The Abu Dhabi stock exchange had proposed the price stabilization mechanism to be activated once the stock commenced trading. Further details about the specifics and mechanics of this proposed tool are scant at this moment.

It is noteworthy that Investcorp, the Middle East’s largest alternative asset manager, unveiled its IPO plans recently, a move that was seen as a significant development for the region’s financial landscape. The withdrawal of these banking giants raises questions regarding the feasibility of implementing novel financial mechanisms in a regulatory environment.
