Polsinelli Seeks Dismissal of Ex-Partner’s Claims in Sexual Harassment Suit

In a recent dispute, Polsinelli PC, a prominent national law firm, has filed a motion to dismiss an ex-partner’s sexual harassment lawsuit, alleging the claims are beyond the specified statutory obligations of Missouri law as dictated by her employment contract. The firm’s legal team stated that the accusations leveled by the ex-partner are both “legally and factually deficient”, in their submissions to a federal judge. The ex-partner alleges that senior attorneys forced undesired intimacy onto her.

The former partner, Julia Rix, joined Polsinelli PC’s Washington office in 2021. In her suit, Rix alleges that she was subjected to unwanted sexual attention from several senior lawyers at the firm. The law firm, however, pushes back on these allegations, arguing that Rix failed to efficiently plead some of the claims, while insisting that some of her grievances should be settled through arbitration.

According to documents filed as part of Polsinelli’s motion to dismiss in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, Rix’s allegations violate the terms of her employment agreement with the firm, which requires her to bring her claims under Missouri law.

As this case actuates, it serves as a striking reminder of the persisting issue of inappropriate behavior within the legal field and the need for clear dispute resolution methods within law firms. As we continue to follow this case, legal professionals will undoubtedly watch with interest to see how these allegations, and their handling by Polsinelli, may influence broader norms and practices within the legal profession.
