Rising Legal Tech Costs: Impact on Law Firms and Corporations Worldwide

The escalating expenses of legal tech is a growing concern affecting law firms and corporations globally. A remarkable Law.com report draws attention to some key issues surrounding this rise. As the report, titled “Legal Careers of Parents and Child Caregivers”, points out, working mothers and caregivers in the legal field face a unique set of challenges that often push them to leave their jobs.

Compiled by the ABA Commission on Women, the report makes use of data from over 8,000 respondents and 10 nationwide focus groups. It highlights a disturbing pattern wherein mothers are frequently overlooked for prominent assignments, omitted from matters involving travel, and lack sponsors and mentors within the firm (Law.com’s Amanda O’Brien reports). This trend is particularly evident as income levels rise, with a clear disparity between male and female attorneys.

In related news, Elizabeth K. McCloskey, a partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, has officially joined the defense team for Meta Platforms in a significant digital privacy class action. Filed in the California Northern District Court on September 9, the lawsuit alleges that co-defendant H&R Block used tracking pixels to share consumers’ browsing histories with third parties, including Meta Platforms. This would be in direct violation of the state’s Invasion of Privacy Act (Law.com reports).
