Florida Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott have called upon the state’s three federal district court chief justices to impose disclosure regulations on foreign entities that seek to fund US legal proceedings. In a letter penned by the Senators, they argued that third-party litigation financing investments from international parties could leverage an excessive amount of influence over the course of litigation.
Rubio and Scott, both Republicans, expressed serious concerns regarding the possibility of these foreign funders providing hostile entities with enough leverage to exert hidden influence on cases moving through the federal judiciary. The Senators are particularly concerned about cases related to critical infrastructure, as these may have wide-ranging implications for national security.
The letter, written on November 3rd and addressed to Chief Judges Mark Walker, Cecilia Altonaga, and William Stafford, highlights one such instance where a Chinese company is reportedly financing four intellectual property suits in US courts. In such situations, the Senators argue, foreign interests could potentially manipulate US legal procedures to extend civil disputes to their advantage.
