In its essence, the Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, is a U.S federal document that every employer in the United States must complete and retain for every person they hire for employment in the United States. This includes both citizens and noncitizens alike. Its primary function is to verify the identity of an employee and their authorization to work in the United States.
This major update comes as a reminder for businesses to always maintain compliance with federal employment laws and to reassess their current hiring processes in view of the new requirement, emphasizing on the importance of familiarizing themselves with the revised Form I-9 at the earliest.
It is important to note that the new version of the Form-I9 will become the only acceptable version of the document from November 1, 2023. Misunderstandings or ignorant use of outdated forms after this date may lead to penalties and legal complications.
