A group of renowned media lawyers have voiced criticisms against the Law Society, accusing it of yielding to media and political pressure, and presenting an unbalanced and misleading narrative concerning SLAPPs (strategic litigation against public participation). As stated in their correspondence to the Law Society on October 27, the Society of Media Lawyers highlighted that they believe the account portrayed by certain factions in the media and pressure groups is erroneous. They assert it dramatically overstates the problem and unfairly puts media lawyers under scrutiny.
The group, which includes legal representatives from eminent law firms Carter Ruck, Mishcon de Reya, CMS, and Osborne Clarke, has encountered opposition from individuals such as former Clifford Chance lawyer Dan Neidle.
