Enduring Law Firm Stroock & Stroock & Lavan Faces Dissolution as Attorneys Find New Opportunities

Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, a renowned Biglaw firm that’s been in operation for nearly 150 years, is approaching dissolution, according to recent reports. The firm’s partners and associates are migrating to new legal pastures during these challenging times, confirmed Alan Klinger, the firm’s former co-managing partner.

Speaking to Reuters, Klinger, who is soon joining Steptoe & Johnson to lead the labor practice, stated, “Our people are landing well. That is gratifying.” Klinger’s announcement comes as a positive reminder that despite the ominous headlines foretelling the firm’s end, individuals are successfully transitioning to new firms.

Last year, Stroock attempted a merger with Steptoe, although the discussions did not bear fruit. Despite the unsuccessful merger talks, some of the Stroock team, including its former co-managing partner, found their new professional home at Steptoe.

However, Steptoe & Johnson is not the only firm to welcome former Stroock attorneys. According to the same report, several firms, including Crowell & Moring, Hogan Lovells, Squire Patton Boggs, and Thompson Coburn, have extended opportunities to Stroock’s partners and associates.

It’s important to remember that despite the unfortunate demise of such a long-standing institution in the legal industry, its people—its most valuable assets—have found new vessels to continue delivering their expertise. Amid all turbulence, Stroock’s story offers valuable lessons about resilience and adaptation in times of change.
