Michael Sander, founder of legal analytics product Docket Alarm, has announced his departure from the company. The decision arrives seven months following the acquisition of the company by legal research firm vLex.
Prior to its purchase by vLex, Docket Alarm had been part of legal research entity Fastcase, which had itself acquired Docket Alarm in January 2018. Docket Alarm played a significant role in the recent merger of Fastcase and vLex.
In an internal communication with vLex staff dated Nov. 22, Sander stated his intentions to take a short break before resurfacing within the industry, maintaining a continued relationship with vLex. While details remain undisclosed, Sander indicated plans to undertake a new venture.
His departure from Docket Alarm paves the way for Daniel Ivtsan to take the reins as the new leader of the Docket Alarm product. Ivtsan’s previous experience includes a role as VP of product at court data and analytics company UniCourt, and chief product officer at Gavelytics, which ceased operations in June 2022.
Sander’s journey with Docket Alarm began in 2012 while he was still working as an intellectual property associate in New York. He gradually expanded the product’s coverage, from only focusing on federal court dockets to include state court dockets as well. During his time with Docket Alarm, Sander notably implemented GPT-3 generative AI technology to aid legal professionals in viewing summaries of court filings without opening the entire file. The integration of generative AI was seen as a significant advancement for the merged vLex-Fastcase entity.
Ed Walters, chief strategy officer at vLex and former CEO of Fastcase, described Sander’s departure as amicable, commending his contributions to Docket Alarm. Walters declared that, under the leadership of Ivtsan, vLex will enhance its investment in Docket Alarm, aiming to accelerate the product’s growth and extend its global reach.
