Golden Gate Law Discontinues JD Program Amid Debt and Bar Exam Concerns

Golden Gate Law has formally announced that it will no longer be providing JD programs. Ongoing concerns over high student debt and low pass rates for the bar exam have pointed to this likelihood for some time.

The decision has been reached after months of deliberations and reviewing relevant data. The Board of Trustees at Golden Gate University has voted to stop its American Bar Association-accredited JD degree and instead has opted to offer a ‘teach-out’ option for currently enrolled JD students. Further students will not be accepted into the JD program.

While the popular JD program is being sunsetted, Golden Gate Law will continue to provide excellent educational opportunities, offering degrees at the graduate and undergraduate levels as it has been doing since 1901. This decision impacts only the JD program within the Law School.

Potential students still interested in pursuing a Law Degree at Golden Gate Law could go for an LLM program. Current JD students at Golden Gate ought to prepare for changed circumstances that might include commutes. While details at this point are sparse, Golden Gate Law has recently submitted a detailed plan to the ABA. Time should reveal more about this plan.

The decision to discontinue the JD program is indeed a notable one, and we extend our well-wishes to the JD candidates currently enrolled at Golden Gate Law.
