DOJ Fraud Section Veteran Allan Medina Joins Goodwin Procter’s White Collar Team

Goodwin Procter has expanded its white collar capabilities by adding Allan Medina, the former senior deputy chief of the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) fraud section. Medina is set to join Goodwin’s Washington D.C. office as a partner in its white collar defense, government investigations, and healthcare practices. His recruitment comes as part of a trend by the firm to bring former federal prosecutors into their team.

Previously, Katherine Wawrzyniak, a former U.S. Attorney’s office prosecutor, joined the firm’s San Francisco office. Wawrzyniak led government cases against former Google engineer Anthony Levandowski and Russian hacker Yevgeniy Nikulin. In addition, Goodwin also recently recruited David Lynn from Morrison & Foerster to lead its public company advisory practice. Previously, Lynn served as the chief counsel of the corporation finance division at the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Richard Strassberg, chair of Goodwin’s white collar defense and government investigations practice, welcomed Medina’s arrival, saying that the firm has talent “across the spectrum, including many former government, high-level officials” who can bring insightful advice to clients.

Medina joined the DOJ’s fraud division’s healthcare fraud unit in 2012 and became its chief in 2019. As part of the government team, he worked on high-profile cases such as the one against mental health care company Health Care Solutions Network, which had orchestrated a $63 million fraud scheme.

The global healthcare industry is an area of growing interest for firms like Goodwin. Co-chair of Goodwin’s healthcare practice, Chris Wilson said their plan is to create a team focusing predominantly or exclusively on healthcare from a disputes and investigations perspective.

Medina’s arrival is particularly significant. Before stepping down as senior deputy chief, he and his team were instrumental in shaping corporate enforcement and compliance, particularly in the healthcare and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act sectors. Medina discussed his outlook on joining Goodwin, expressing he is looking forward to bringing his “expertise for not just my clients, but my team here at Goodwin.”
