In-House Counsel Dissatisfaction Escalates: Addressing Understaffing and Retention Challenges in the Legal Sector

The second annual View from Inside report highlights an image of dissatisfaction amongst in-house counsel, with nearly 90% of respondents reportedly unsatisfied with their current positions. The survey, conducted by Wakefield Research, includes responses from over 200 general counsels across a range of sectors, shedding light on their challenges ahead and potential attrition risks within teams that are already thin on the ground.

Key findings of the report include significant staffing and resourcing issues. Over 80% of in-house counsel believe that their legal departments do not have sufficient personnel. Alarmingly, traditional law firms and their recruitment methods are failing to address these gaps. The report suggests that junior and mid-level lawyers, especially those from Gen Z and the Millennial generation, are likely to switch jobs, constituting another significant threat.

The full report and an upcoming webinar on December 14th, 2023 at 1 p.m. ET aim to provide a more comprehensive overview of the Axiom survey findings. Speakers will shed light on strategies for GCs to effectively manage their resources and offer solutions to retain top legal talent. The discussion will center on the urgent need to rectify issues of understaffing and overwork before valuable team members leave and trigger unavoidable consequences.

The 2024 legal landscape requires innovative solutions and anticipatory approaches to tackle the challenges facing in-house counsels. Addressing issues of discontentment and creating robust tactics to keep top talent will be vital to shaping the future of the legal profession.
