Law Firms Urged to Offer Healthier Food Options for Employee Meals

When it comes to fostering camaraderie and reducing expenses, offering free meals to their staff has been a longstanding practice amongst law firms. However, the selection of food offered is increasingly coming under scrutiny by employees who are hungry for healthier options.

Jordan Rothman, a partner at The Rothman Law Firm, shared his personal experiences navigating the free food culture at various law firms before starting his own practice. His experiences ranged from an abundance of plain or pepperoni pizza offerings to deli sandwiches consisting of turkey, pastrami, and roast beef. Despite his personal fondness for these meals, Rothman has increasingly noticed concerns from his peers about the lack of healthier alternatives.

Among the individuals Rothman interacted with, some were striving to maintain healthier eating patterns or were on specific diets. Their attempts often were challenged by the unhealthy options provided by their firms. Furthermore, some individuals even found socialization amongst colleagues challenging due to these unhealthy food offerings. Additionally, some mentioned feeling pressured into compromising on their diet plans to avoid seeming out of place during firm events.

Rothman suggests that law firms can offer healthier options to employees without considerable issues. He offers examples like offering sushi, which could be a healthier choice than pizza or similar foods, or providing a wider variety of salads. This approach would enable employees to successfully maintain their dietary plans while also engaging socially during events.

Rothman emphasizes the gratitude felt by employees for firms that offer free meals during events, as it aids in networking and in increasing attendance at optional events. However, this doesn’t mean firms can’t strive to improve the quality and variety of food they offer. Offering healthier, diverse food options could potentially make firm events more inclusive for all.
