Türkiye has detained 33 suspects due to alleged espionage activities in favor of Israel. Ali Yerlikaya, the Interior Minister of the Turkish government, announced the arrests, part of a wider operation known as ‘Operation Mole.’ The mission is concerned with the suppression of espionage activities against Türkiye. The individuals were arrested at 57 different addresses spread across eight provinces in Türkiye, with charges including kidnapping and assault.
The Turkish government, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has had a progressively tense relationship with Israel since the outbreak of war in Gaza in October 2023. Yerlikaya further criticized the alleged espionage activities in his post, saying, “We will never allow espionage activities to be conducted against the national unity and solidarity of our country.”
Preceding these developments, President Erdogan had expressed his support for Gaza, also criticizing the actions of Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu. The series of arrests in Türkiye involving suspected Israeli espionage activities is seen as a strong statement towards Israel and the Western countries:
-
On November 15, 2023, Erdogan broadened his criticism to include Israel’s Western supporters.
-
The Israeli government declared plans to assassinate Hamas leaders worldwide, including in Türkiye, which has been a refuge to several Hamas officials in the past.
-
Erdogan warned of “serious consequences” if Israel were to attack Hamas leaders on Turkish soil (source).
Both Türkiye and Israel have consequently recalled their ambassadors. The ongoing tensions demonstrate the fragile state of relations in the region and raise questions about the role international law will play in the unfolding situation.
