The Ostankino District Court of Moscow announced the arrest of US citizen, Robert Woodland Romanov, on drug-related charges earlier this week.
Accused of the large-scale production, sale, or possession of illegal drugs, a crime defined under the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, Romanov could face up to 20 years imprisonment or an unlimited fine if convicted.
Romanov has been associated with an interview published by the Russian newspaper, Komsomolskaya Pravda, in 2020. Born in Russia in 1991, he was adopted by American parents in 1993 for an alleged payment of $10,000. He returned to Russia in 2019 with the intent of finding his biological parents and subsequently found employment as an English teacher. More on this can be read in the original interview.
This arrest is the latest incident trialing the strained Russo-American relations that have dwindled since the outset of the War in Ukraine. In 2023, Russia arrested American journalists Evan Gershkovich and Alsu Kurmasheva on charges of espionage and failure to register as foreign agents. In a related event, two Russian-Canadians were taken into custody in New York in October 2023 for allegedly conspiring to illegally export restricted technology valued at $13.9 million to the Russian military.
Despite these developments, the US embassy has yet to make any public announcements regarding Romanov’s arrest. Content sourced from JURIST News.
