The German investigative journalism organization Correctiv has recently uncovered features of an alleged plot involving members of the far-right party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), and several other businessmen. Centered on the concept of “remigration”, this scheme appears to take aim at asylum seekers, foreigners with residency rights, and those citizens perceived to be “non-assimilated”.
Reportedly, a secret conference transpired in a hotel near Potsdam, involving AfD affiliates and representatives of the Identitarian Movement. The organizers were Gernot Mörig, a previous dentist with notable ties to right-wing extremism, and Hans-Christian Limmer, a well-known investor. The meeting’s alleged objective was to strategize the expulsion of individuals, based on racial criteria, from Germany. Distinctly influential AfD associates such as Roland Hartwig, assistant to AfD leader Alice Weidel, were said to be present and supported the so-called “master plan”. Led by far-right activist Martin Sellner, the plan’s major intent purportedly was to convert remigration into a political agenda, highlighting the significance of establishing a right-wing extremist counter-public and destabilizing democracy.
In reaction to the report, German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, issued a statement asserting that Germany would not permit anyone to distinguish between citizens based on whether or not someone has an immigrant background. He emphasized that they protect everyone, regardless of origin, skin colour, or how unpleasant someone might be for individuals harbouring assimilation fantasies.
Alternative for Germany is a right-wing political entity in the country. It originated in 2013, initially gaining recognition due to its opposition to the Eurozone and thereby, European Union policies. In course of time, the focus of the party has transitioned to a myriad of conservative and nationalist matters, including immigration, national identity, and scepticism toward the mainstream political establishments. Regina Habeck, Germany’s vice-chancellor, in a local news interview, alluded to the potential prohibition of AfD, in light of the allegations brought forth by Correctiv’s report.
