eBay Settles for $3 Million in Massachusetts Cyberstalking Case Involving Executives

EBay, the renowned digital marketplace, has agreed to a $3 million settlement to conclude criminal charges filed after its employees engaged in a menacing harassment campaign directed at a Massachusetts-based couple. The couple ran an online newsletter—EcommerceBytes—that incurred the ire of eBay’s top executives with its negative depiction of the company. This egregious abuse included the sending of live spiders and cockroaches.

This penalty, exacted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts, represents the largest amount permissible under the six felony charges brought against the company, which has its headquarters in San Jose, California. The announcement of both the charges and the settlement were simultaneously made public on Thursday.

The unfortunate series of events, dubbed by eBay CEO Jamie Iannone as “reprehensible”, stretched back to 2019 and reportedly involved not only the delivery of live insects but also a bloody pig mask. Iannone’s denouncement of the activities underscores the degree of the misconduct and the necessity for stringent repercussions.

Both the company’s admission to these charges and its agreement to the multi-million dollar punitive settlement provide a stark reminder of the grave consequences that corporations can face when crossing the line into harassment and intimidation.

More detailed information regarding the charges and the settlement are available for review on the website of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.
