At a convention in Tallahassee, the bar’s board of governors approved an 18-page opinion outlining broad principles for AI use. These encompass the review of computer-generated work, fee structures, and the all-important concern of preserving client confidentiality.
According to the guidelines, AI is expected to function as a tool to assist legal professionals while avoiding potential pitfalls often associated with new, powerful technologies. The bar’s approach to dealing with AI ethical issues is akin to addressing customary legal ethics matters, signaling a consistent application of existing rules to emerging technologies.
The motivation for making headway in this field arises from identifying the opportunities and challenges posed by addressing AI, according to bar President Scott Westheimer.
