Federal Circuit Upholds Decision, Denies New Trial in Sony Graphics Patent Case

On February 2, 2024, the Federal Circuit upheld a Texas federal court’s decision not to award a new trial to two tech firms, Infernal Technology LLC and Terminal Reality Inc. This decision came as a result of their patent infringement case against multimedia giant, Sony.

Both Infernal Technology and Terminal Reality had taken Sony to court over allegations of patent infringement. The disputed patents related to specific techniques for lighting in computer graphics. The jury, however, didn’t find grounds to the claim that Sony had breached their patents.

In the wake of this verdict, both Infernal Technology and Terminal Reality sought to have a new trial granted, possibly with the hope of a different outcome. Their appeal was, unfortunately for them, rejected by the Texas federal court.

As they escalated the matter to the Federal Circuit, they might have maintained optimism for a favorable resolution. However, the Federal Circuit’s ruling on Friday reinforced the stand of the Texas federal court, leaving Infernal Technology and Terminal Reality in a complex position concerning their claims against Sony.
