Ayotzinapa Case Protesters Breach National Palace Gate Demanding Progress in Mexico’s Unsolved Disappearances

On Wednesday, a group of protesters voiced their concerns regarding the government’s lack of response to the 2014 disappearance of 43 students, famously known as the “Ayotzinapa Case”. The protesters made their voice heard by breaking down a door of Mexico’s National Palace while President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was conducting his usual press conference BBC.

The incident of students’ disappearance dates back to September 2014 when students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Normal School in Ayotzinapa were allegedly attacked by the local police in Iguala, Guerrero, while they were on their way to a demonstration in Mexico City. The confrontation resulted in 6 dead, at least 40 wounded, and 43 missing students CNDH.

The Wednesday protest is a culmination of mounting dissatisfaction with the investigation into the missing students. Despite consistent calls from various human rights organizations, as well as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the investigation into the students’ disappearance has made little progress OAS. These groups affirm that Mexico is yet to provide a satisfactory response regarding the students’ disappearances OAS Report.

Despite the outrage displayed on Wednesday, President López Obrador did not cease his conference nor agree to converse with the protestors. Instead, he described the protest as “a vulgar act of provocation” that had been orchestrated by his adversaries YouTube.

The attorney for some of the parents of the missing students expressed that communication with the government is “broken”, interpreted by the parents as a sign that investigations into their children’s disappearances are at a standstill YouTube. With only a few months left of López Obrador’s tenure, protests from grief-stricken families and the civil society continue to mount, and as of yet, there is no answer forthcoming from the promised investigation El Pais.
