The Instance Nationale Indépendate de Reconnaissance et de Réparation (INIRR), an independent French reparations agency, recently reported that it has furnished over 500 victims of sexual abuse, committed by representatives of the Catholic Church, with financial compensations. This data was disclosed as part of INIRR’s activities in the year 2023.
According to the same report, more than 60% of the victims are male, with an average age of 61. When the abuse took place, 51% of victims were between the ages of 11 to 15, and the remaining 49% were aged between 6 to 10. The instances of abuse predominantly occurred during youth events, Catechism, at school, or in the homes of the priests.
Formed in 2021, INIRR was an initiative by the Conference of Bishops of France, constructed as a response to the revelations of the CIASE report, which discovered over 216,000 instances of abuse within France from the years 1950 to 2020. Funded by the Conference of Bishops from the diocese’s assets and private loans, the INIRR operates independently to provide compensation to victims who are unable to pursue legal relief due to the statute of limitation. Additionally, the organization offers various forms of assistance based on the victims’ resonation, such as dialogue with the Church, a letter from the Church, provision of victim testimony, and therapy. Similar entities have been established across parts of Europe, including Switzerland, and in the United States to address this persistent global crisis.
Unfortunately, reports of widespread abuse within the Catholic Church are not confined to one region, with incidences foreshadowed in Bolivia, Spain, Canada, Portugal, Argentina and the United States.
