A Republican representative from Washington state has filed an emergency stay request with the US Supreme Court, aiming to block the enforcement of a newly adopted voter map.
Rep. Alex Ybarra and two other Hispanic voters initiated the request on Monday, addressing it to Justice Elena Kagan, who oversees appeals for the Ninth Circuit. In such scenarios, it’s common for individual justices to bring emergency appeals to the consideration of the full court.
The controversial map came about as a result of a previous court ruling that found the old map to discriminate against Hispanic voters, particularly in the district neighbouring Ybarra’s. The map aimed to address this discrimination, but Ybarra and his compatriots argue that the new version further dilutes Hispanic voting power.
