In troubling developments, South Korean Ambassador to Australia, Lee Jong-seop resigned on Friday after only 25 days in office amidst allegations concerning investigation interference. The investigation in question revolves around the death of Marine Sergeant Choi Su-geun, a matter that Lee is allegedly involved in. With his resignation, Lee has expressed an urgency for the authorities to conduct a swift investigation, assuring his full cooperation on the matter.
According to Lee, the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials has not scheduled an investigation, despite multiple requests on his part. Eager to collaborate, he revealed that to do so, he would need to remain in South Korea, rendering him incapable of fulfilling his diplomatic duties. His resignation was later sanctioned by both the South Korean Foreign Affairs Minister and President.
As South Korea gears up for the legislative election in April 2024, an official from the ruling party has suggested that the allegations against Lee are politically motivated, being a calculated move from the opposition given the approaching election date.
In the aftermath of heavy rain damage per July 2023, Marine Sergeant Choi was found dead during deployment sent to assist in disaster relief in Yequan City. The Department of Defense Investigation Command later conducted an inquiry into the circumstances of the death. The resulting report concluded that two lieutenant colonels had violated the brigade commander’s instructions and were found guilty. Amidst additional claims from former Marine Corps leader Park Jung-hoon that the original investigation may have been under undue pressure, Lee, then Minister of National Defense, was embroiled in further controversy. With these mounting accusations, the National Assembly initiated a probe into the allegations in October 2023.
Despite the ongoing domestic political controversies, Lee was appointed ambassador in March. Local media reported discontent from the Australian government regarding the appointment of an ambassador involved in domestic political issues. The government, however, had granted the agrément (approval of a diplomatic envoy) without raising objections, in respect to the friendly relations between the two countries.
