On Saturday, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that three United Nations military observers and a Lebanese interpreter sustained injuries from an explosion while on foot patrol along the Blue Line. This was revealed in an official statement by the UNIFIL spokesperson, Andrea Tenenti, which was disseminated through their official account.
In the statement, Tenenti explained, “This morning, three OGL (UNTSO) military observers and one Lebanese language assistant on a foot patrol along the Blue Line were injured when an explosion occurred near their location…” Additionally, the injured personnel have since been evacuated for medical treatment, with investigations into the origin of the explosion currently ongoing.
The reaction from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was one of denial as they refuted any involvement in the incident. A statement on the IDF’s official account read, “Contrary to the reports, the IDF did not strike a UNIFIL vehicle in the area of Rmeish this morning.”
Prior to this incident, in December 2023, UNIFIL reported an injury sustained by a peacekeeper during a patrol in southern Lebanon, after being attacked by local male villagers. Several similar attacks on UNIFIL peacekeepers have been reported in recent times, including an injury from Israeli gunfire in November and another amidst clashes between Israeli and Hezbollah forces back in October.
For context, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was established by the United Nations Security Council in March 1978 to monitor the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon after the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Its mandate also includes assisting the Lebanese government in restoring its authoritative control over the area, ensuring Israeli forces’ withdrawal from Lebanon, and providing humanitarian assistance to the civilian population.
