As reported by Bloomberg Law, General Motors Co.’s Craig Glidden, the company’s legal chief, earned an impressive $11.3 million in 2023. The information was disclosed in the GM proxy statement published by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
Glidden, who wears many hats including those of GM’s executive VP for legal, Cruise co-president, and chief administrative officer, was commended for leading Cruise LLC (GM’s autonomous vehicle subsidiary) through a period of regulatory, legal, and business transformation. His leadership was instrumental in rebuilding trust with the public and regulators, particularly following Cruise setbacks such as the halt in service after a robotaxi accident in October.
According to the proxy statement, Glidden received $893,750 in base pay last year, along with $1.6 million in stock options and another $2 million in a “one-time” restricted stock unit grant for his appointment to the Cruise position. Glidden began his tenure at GM in March 2015 as the executive vice president and general counsel.
The extensive remuneration package reflects the crucial role Glidden played within the organization. Most notably, he provided “strategic counsel” during negotiations with the United Auto Workers, an effort that enabled GM to successfully secure a new multi-year collective bargaining agreement. Glidden also made significant contributions to GM’s efforts in developing a more sustainable and resilient supply chain that’s focused on North America and free trade partners. It is worth noting, however, that the debate surrounding executive compensation structures and levels continues to be a potent issue.
Merely reviewing the sum of Glidden’s earnings does not fully capture the immense responsibilities that he manages in multiple significant roles within General Motors. It indeed substantiates the remarkable contributions he has made to the automobile industry giant.
