The wave of data privacy laws continues to spread across the United States, with Nebraska joining the fray as the fourth state this year, and the sixteenth overall, to pass such a statute. Governor Jim Pillen signed the Nebraska Data Privacy Law into effect on April 18. Prior to Nebraska, states such as New Jersey, New Hampshire and Kentucky also erected legislation aimed at protecting the data privacy of their citizens.
In terms of the substance of these regulations, Nebraska’s law largely adheres to the norms established by its precursors, albeit with one notable divergence. The specifics of this differential aspect, however, are currently under wraps. Meanwhile, Maryland is the next state expected to adopt a data privacy regulation, as legislation has passed through both chambers and awaits the governor’s approval.
The appearance of these state-level data privacy laws is a testament to the growing recognition and importance of consumer data protection, even in the absence of a comprehensive federal law. For more details on Nebraska’s new legislation, click here.
