With artificial intelligence (AI) continuing to shape economies and societies, a bipartisan group of senators is calling for action on key bills and policies concerning the technology. The group has now released a policy roadmap, a plan designed to initiate legislative action that not only promotes AI development but also averts potential harms.
The 30-page ‘policy roadmap’ was unveiled by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and senators Mike Rounds, Martin Heinrich, and Todd Young. These individuals are part of a bipartisan AI working group which first convened nearly a year ago to address the significant economic, social, and national security implications of the technology.
According to the group, it is vital for Congress to actively work on establishing rules that protect Americans from potential threats exemplified by misinformation and civil liberties infringements brought about by AI technologies’ deployment.
In addition, this roadmap serves to urge committees to contribute to AI legislation and forward its progression. Developed from areas of bipartisan consensus, the plan emerged following a set of confidential Senate forums held in the fall, where they discussed the various impacts of AI.
While AI holds immense potential to transform industries and global economies, effectively monitoring and managing its impacts remains crucial. The significance of this plan is that it clearly identifies the necessity of both the development and the balanced regulation of AI, a technology shaping the future.
