GM Absolved of Inequitable Conduct Allegations in Patent Dispute

A federal judge in Chicago has absolved General Motors from accusations of “inequitable conduct” pertaining to a contentious issue of patent filing. A longstanding legal opponent of GM failed to convince the judge that engineers, affiliated to the automaker, exhibited “deceptive intent” during the submission of a design patent to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office under an incorrect name.

This finding alleviates General Motors, one of the largest global automotive manufacturers, from accountability for the alleged impropriety during the patent filing process. The lawsuit had concerned matters of intellectual property rights, an area that frequently evokes intense scrutiny and disputes in the car manufacturing sector.
