In a significant development in the New Jersey judiciary, former acting attorney general John Jay Hoffman has been nominated for the state Supreme Court by Governor Phil Murphy. Hoffman, who served under Governor Chris Christie from 2013 to 2016, is poised to take over from Justice Lee A. Solomon, who is retiring upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70. Hoffman’s nomination, however, is still subject to approval by the state Senate.
Presently, Hoffman holds the position of general counsel at Rutgers University. His nomination is notable for maintaining the unwritten rule of partisan balance on New Jersey’s highest court.
