International law firm Baker McKenzie has hired a five-lawyer banking and finance team from Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH) in Johannesburg as part of its expansion strategy. The team, led by Phetole Modika and Pitso Kortjaas who both join Baker McKenzie as partners, brings an impeccable track record in banking and finance transactions across Africa.
Lerisha Naidu, Baker McKenzie Johannesburg managing partner, highlighted the move as part of the firm’s focus on bolstering its capabilities in key African markets. This recent team hire builds on the firm’s continued lateral hiring strategy, which saw the addition of three transactional partners to its corporate M&A team in January 2023.
