India’s Central Bureau for Investigation (CBI) detained four students of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna, on Friday, in connection with the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak. The detentions follow irregular results observed in the 2024 NEET undergraduate exam, prompting questions regarding the integrity of the test.
Dr. Gopal Krushna Pal, Director of AIIMS Patna, confirmed the detentions, stating, “Our four students have been formally arrested,” citing information from the CBI. He added that the university is deliberating possible suspensions for the students, pending further legal advice.
Earlier, the Patna High Court in Bihar state directed the CBI to take 13 individuals into custody for alleged involvement in the NEET examination paper leak case. Although the CBI’s initial request for custody was denied, the previous court order was suspended due to the gravity of the case. These individuals remain in CBI custody for a 15-day period from their date of arrest.
The 2024 NEET exam has led to allegations of rank inflation, cheating, and a possible question paper leak. Following the emergence of the question papers on social media shortly after the exam, the National Testing Agency (NTA) initially denied any impropriety. However, subsequent investigations traced the leaked papers to Nalanda, Bihar, resulting in the arrest of 18 suspects. As concerns over fairness and integrity intensify, the NTA has instituted a panel to further investigate these allegations.
