Florida has announced a significant change in its bar examination format, joining 20 other jurisdictions in adopting the NextGen bar exam. The state will phase out the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) starting in July 2028. According to state officials, this new format will focus more effectively on legal subjects essential for novice lawyers.
Michele Gavagni, the executive director of the Florida Board of Bar Examiners, highlighted the widespread support for the NextGen exam from Florida’s law schools. “With the discontinuation of the MBE, the overwhelming majority of Florida law schools support the decision to adopt the NextGen exam as a component of the Florida Bar Examination,” she stated. The NextGen exam may also include a section specific to Florida law.
