The Association of Autonomous Austrian Women’s Shelters (AÖF) recently reported an alarming increase in femicides within Austria, reaching record levels. According to AÖF, approximately three women are murdered each month in the country, with a significant number of these homicides involving intimate partners or family members. By early August 2024, AÖF documented 15 femicides and 26 instances of severe violence against women.
As the umbrella organization for 16 autonomous women’s shelters in Austria, AÖF plays a crucial role in supporting victims. In 2023 alone, these shelters provided care to a total of 1,148 individuals, which included 571 women and 577 children. The trend of increasing violence against women is becoming a critical concern. Austria Police Crime Statistics from 2023 indicate a decline in male murder victims by 9.1 percent, while female murder victims have increased by 7.7 percent compared to the previous year.
Further research highlights that nearly a quarter of Austrian women experience physical violence from the age of 15, with a similar percentage experiencing sexual violence, according to Statistik Austria. These statistics underscore the persistent and escalating issue of gender-based violence in the nation.
In response to this ongoing issue, the European Commission’s Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 outlines comprehensive measures to combat gender-based violence. This strategy emphasizes the importance of collecting comparable and wide-ranging data on violence against women to better understand and address the problem. The EU has reiterated its commitment to preventing and combating all forms of gender-based violence, ensuring victim support and protection, and holding perpetrators accountable.
The widespread recognition of this issue suggests that more effective and immediate actions are needed to address and reduce gender-based violence in Austria and beyond, reinforcing the call for stronger protective measures and support systems for women at risk.
