Next week, at the ILTACON conference, Portugal-based Legau is set to mark its official launch into the United States market. This comprehensive legal document drafting platform, initially released in Portugal in 2021, has been chosen as one of the 26 companies to participate in ILTACON’s Startup Hub. Legau aims to revolutionize the legal drafting process by supporting attorneys throughout the entire drafting cycle, directly within the familiar environments of Microsoft Word and Outlook.
Legau’s platform includes integration with widely-used document management systems such as iManage, NetDocuments, OneDrive, and SharePoint. The tool is intended to assist legal professionals through four principal stages: research, planning, creation, and review.
- Research: Attorneys can gather necessary information, including templates and precedents, by integrating Legau with their document management systems.
- Planning: Tools are available to help plan the structure and content of documents, including the generation of checklists and the use of chat-based interfaces for iteration.
- Creation: Using templates or previous documents, Legau allows users to draft documents, incorporating AI to adjust content based on selected references and context.
- Review: The platform provides comparison and redlining tools to ensure documents meet firm standards and comply with internal guidelines.
Generative AI is a core feature of Legau, which assists in creating drafts by leveraging existing documents and templates. This AI-driven functionality is designed to handle various types of transactional and litigation documents, including contracts, memos, briefs, and pleadings.
The integration of case law research, boasting access to approximately nine million federal and state court decisions, further enhances Legau for drafting litigation documents. Attorneys can filter and search for related decisions, inserting quotations and citations directly into their drafts.
Legau’s cofounders, including Luis Alves Dias and Diogo Pereira, come from legal practice backgrounds, while Luis Lopes contributes his expertise as a computer engineer. Aimed primarily at mid-sized firms with 50-250 attorneys, Dias acknowledges the initial phase of adapting to the market variations in the U.S.
Law firms in the U.S. are invited to participate in an early adopter program, providing three months of free access to up to 200 users for firms that sign up by September 30. Participating firms can also nominate a pro bono organization to receive a complimentary one-year subscription for up to 100 users.
If you are attending ILTACON, you can find Legau in the Startup Hub and attend their presentation on the Startup Stage on August 14 at 12:35 p.m. CT.
