EU Condemns Kosovo’s Closure of Serbian Post Offices, Urges Dialogue with Serbia

The European Union on Monday condemned Kosovo authorities’ closure of nine Post of Serbia branches, asserting that the actions breach agreements established under the EU-facilitated Dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia. The EU emphasized that any actions taken unilaterally by Kosovo, without engaging or consulting Serbia, will obstruct the ongoing process aimed at normalizing relations. This move by Kosovo is viewed as a violation of the arrangements agreed upon in 2013 and 2015, which stipulated that postal services issues be addressed in subsequent dialogues.

The European Union urged Kosovo to reconsider its steps and strive for a negotiated solution within the framework of the Dialogue. Citing the importance of collaboration, the EU expected both Kosovo and Serbia to propose constructive ideas that could lead to viable solutions in the upcoming Dialogue meeting. The EU’s statement also highlighted the adverse impact of the post office closures on the daily lives and living conditions of Kosovo-Serb communities in the affected areas.

The closures attracted swift criticism from Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic who accused Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti of attempting to provoke conflict. The United States also joined the condemnation, with its Embassy in Kosovo issuing a statement condemning the actions. The U.S. noted that Kosovo’s uncoordinated actions increased risks to Kosovan citizens and KFOR soldiers, escalated regional tensions, and undermined Kosovo’s reputation as a reliable international partner.
