Ropes & Gray Eyes Paris Expansion, Signaling Increased European Presence

Ropes & Gray is setting its sights on Paris, as part of a strategic move to expand its footprint in Europe. The Boston-headquartered firm is reportedly planning to establish its first office in continental Europe by recruiting talent from rival firms in the French capital. The firm, which currently operates offices in London and Dublin, as well as several in Asia and across seven cities in the US, did not respond to requests for comment on its Paris office plans.

Paris has a long-standing history as a hub for major US-based law firms, including White & Case, Latham & Watkins, and Winston & Strawn. Recently, Houston-based Bracewell opened a Paris office with a team from Norton Rose Fulbright, marking one of the few new entries in the market. Ropes & Gray’s entry into Paris is occurring amid a robust hiring spree in London’s legal market, highlighted by aggressive recruitments from firms like Paul Weiss, which has expanded its London office with notable hires from competitors such as Kirkland & Ellis. This environment has allowed top partners to command salaries upwards of $20 million annually.
