Pharmaceutical Giants to Face Trial in Connecticut Over Zantac Cancer Claims

Sixteen plaintiffs’ allegations against several major pharmaceutical companies have withstood an initial challenge over jurisdiction. These plaintiffs allege that they developed cancer due to the medication Zantac, which is widely used to relieve acid reflux and heartburn. The complaint lists Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc., Boehringer Ingelheim Corp., Boehringer Ingelheim USA Corp., GlaxoSmithKline LLC, GlaxoSmithKline Holdings Inc., Pfizer Inc., Sanofi-Aventis U.S. LLC, and Sanofi US Services Inc. as defendants.

Waterbury Superior Court Judge W. Glen Pierson denied the companies’ motion to dismiss, ruling that by registering to do business in Connecticut, the companies had consented to the jurisdiction of the state’s courts. This ruling allows the plaintiffs’ lawsuit to proceed.
