Protests in Pakistan: Imran Khan Supporters Demand Release Amid Government Crackdown

In the wake of escalating tensions in Pakistan, supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan have taken to the streets, demanding his release from incarceration. The demonstrations were sparked by a call for nationwide protests issued by Khan, leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), on November 13. The protests, scheduled to intensify on November 24, aim to reclaim the party’s electoral mandate, which PTI claims was unjustly stripped following the general elections on February 8. At the heart of these demands is the reversal of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, deemed by PTI as a consolidation of establishment control over the political landscape.

Pursuing a broader strategy to limit PTI’s influence, the federal government had previously passed the Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Act 2024, a measure implemented in September. Citing this law, the Islamabad High Court declared the new wave of protests unlawful, citing the absence of required permissions. Nonetheless, ardent PTI supporters began converging on Islamabad from regions like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK).

The capital saw heightened tensions as protesters were met with robust measures from security forces, including the use of tear gas and roadblocks. PTI convoys reached D-Chowk, a central area in Islamabad, leading to violent clashes that resulted in the deployment of additional security personnel, including Rangers and military troops. A police officer was killed, and numerous injuries were reported among both security forces and protesters.

PTI leaders, including Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, and the Chief Minister of KPK, Ali Amin, led the charge of protesters. During the protests, Bushra Bibi addressed the crowds, asserting that their plan remains unchanged until Khan himself addresses the protestors directly. The government’s stringent response, which includes internet disruptions and mass arrests, has drawn scrutiny and questions regarding its approach to the unrest.

Despite being detained, Imran Khan urged his supporters via social media to “fight till the end”, emphasizing the continuation of protests until demands are met. The government’s stance remains firm, with Interior Minister ruling out any negotiations with the protestors, challenging them to test the government’s resolve.

As Islamabad braces under a lockdown, the protests show no signs of relenting, symbolizing a profound standoff between the government and PTI supporters, leaving the future of these protests uncertain.
