OpenAI, the artificial intelligence group backed by Microsoft, is currently entangled in legal battles over copyright infringement claims from some of India’s largest media organizations. The case, which is the first of its kind against an AI platform in India, has been filed at the Delhi High Court, with hearings set for March 18. This lawsuit follows OpenAI’s ongoing disputes in North America, where similar allegations have been made.
The allegations in India were initially made by Asian News International (ANI) and relate to OpenAI’s use of copyrighted materials to train its large language models, including ChatGPT. These legal challenges echo similar claims in the U.S., where The New York Times Co. brought allegations against OpenAI in December 2023, as well as in Canada, where major media outlets filed a complaint in Ontario.
