Cincinnati’s Disbarred Lawyer Sentenced to 37 Months for Fraudulent Employment in Law Firms

Richard Crosby, a disbarred lawyer from Cincinnati, has been sentenced to 37 months in prison after deceptively securing multiple high-paying positions at law firms across the United States. The legal proceedings, conducted by the US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, concluded with Judge Jeffery P. Hopkins’ decision on February 7. Judge Hopkins recommended that Crosby serve his sentence at FCI Ashland in Kentucky, followed by a maximum of 12 months at a residential reentry center.

Crosby, who has been detained since July, will be credited for the time already served. His indictment arose amid circumstances where he had previously resigned from his Ohio license after allegations of mismanaging client funds. Notably, these misdeeds were committed while Crosby was still on probation, demonstrating his continuation of fraudulent activities even after being sanctioned.

The charges to which Crosby pleaded guilty include three counts of Social Security number fraud. The case highlights the vulnerabilities within the hiring processes in law firms and serves as a cautionary tale for legal institutions to enhance their vetting mechanisms.

This case, covered by Bloomberg Law, sheds light on the challenges legal organizations face in safeguarding their operations from unethical practices by legal professionals.
