Missouri Court Ruling Challenges Rideshare Liability Standards Following Fatal Carjacking

A recent decision by the Missouri Court of Appeals has paved the way for a woman to pursue negligence and product liability claims against rideshare company Lyft, following the fatal carjacking of her son while he was driving for the service. The March 4 ruling by Judge Robert M. Clayton differs from earlier federal court decisions, challenging the stance on rideshare service liability. Previously, in November, U.S. District Judge Stephen R. Clark for the Eastern District of Missouri ruled that Uber was not responsible for sharing information on a dangerous passenger with Lyft. The state court’s determination provides a potential legal foothold for plaintiffs seeking recourse from rideshare companies for incidents involving high-risk riders.
