UK Government Under Fire as Manston Asylum Center Faces Human Rights Violations Inquiry

The UK Home Office is currently under scrutiny following revelations about dangerous conditions at the Manston holding center for asylum seekers. The inquiry stems from reports of overcrowding and serious health issues at the facility in 2022. An internal document released during a legal hearing has brought to light several allegations, including breaches of human rights, which are now under investigation. At least 250 asylum seekers from the facility are poised to sue the government for these alleged violations, a local media outlet has reported.

Among the claimants is a Syrian woman who lost a pregnancy. Separated from her husband after he complained about the conditions, she and their five children were reportedly kept in substandard conditions, leading to severe illness without appropriate medical care. The troubling situation at the center didn’t stop here. Other asylum seekers, including a victim of torture, endured harsh conditions such as denial of basic needs and instances of racism. Tragically, one man, Hussein Haseeb Ahmed, lost his life due to a diphtheria outbreak in the center, with the BBC providing more details here.

The internal document highlights numerous failings, such as breaches of the European Convention of Human Rights and various safety regulations. The center was initially intended to hold migrants temporarily for no more than 14 hours after their arrival. However, reports show that families were sometimes kept there for up to a month, often under conditions breaching legal standards for health and safety. The Independent discusses these conditions and breaches in more detail here.

These developments have added pressure to the UK government, which has faced criticism over its migration policies. The current government efforts include ending controversial contracts such as the Bibby Stockholm barge, as stated by the Labor government in July 2024. The barge, which has housed asylum seekers since August 2023, drew criticism due to its safety conditions. Information regarding the legionella scare and other issues with the barge can be found in Amnesty International UK’s statement, which condemns the living conditions provided to asylum seekers here.
