The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has experienced a 15% reduction in its workforce since October 1. This change results from voluntary separations, early retirements, and the administration’s Fork in the Road deferred resignation program. Despite these staffing changes, SEC Chair Paul Atkins has expressed confidence that the agency can maintain robust oversight of financial markets. During an oversight hearing before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, Atkins mentioned that although the loss of staff represents a significant expertise gap, the commission retains sufficient expertise to continue its regulatory functions effectively.
Atkins assured that positions vacated by the approximately 600 departing employees would eventually be filled, but he emphasized tapping into the existing expertise within the SEC to ensure continued market oversight.
